Can I Apply For Disabilty and Early Social Security Retirement At The Same Time?

Many people wonder if they can apply and receive retirement social security and disability or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) at the same time.  Those who are between 62 and 65 years old and are currently disabled, whether mentally or physically, can apply for both Social Security Disability and retirement benefits.  Do not make the mistake of may people who are disabled and over 62 and simply apply for early retirement.  You may receive more money per month being a disabled, early retirement social security recipient.  Most questions can be answered on the Social Security website or by contacting a Social Security Disability attorney in your area.

Keep in mind that when you retire early under Social Security guidelines you receive a reduced amount of money each month compared to full retirement age.  Having the disability income or SSI will compensate the difference.  Therefore, if you receive 30% less social security benefits at age 64, you receive that amount for the rest of your life.

Here is an example of how early retirement and social security works:

Paul turns 63 years old and his disabilities are so bad he can no longer work.  Paul applies for early social security benefits in May 2015 and begins receiving reduced monthly benefits of $1,400 per month within 90 days.  He then applies for Social Security disability benefits a week later.  After waiting the five month waiting period required by social security he is awarded a disability benefit, which is an increase of $400 per month, equaling  $1,600 per month.  He is not paid any retro payment due to the five month waiting period requirement.  Once Paul reaches full retirement age he will continue to receive $1,600 per month; however, now it is considered Social Security Retirement and not disability.
